Bhutan Tour – 5 Days

  • 2 or 2+
  • Duration 5 Days

Introduction

You will develop a keen understanding of this nation, its culture, traditions, and religion through your Bhutan Cultural Tour. The tour takes you along scenic landscapes, from magnificent mountain ranges to lush green valleys. Bhutan is a beautiful country with stunning landscapes and many historical monuments.

The country lies in the eastern Himalayas, between Tibet and India, with Sikkim to its west. This trip covers Bhutan’s two most popular tourist destinations: Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan, and Paro, Bhutan’s international airport, supplemented by a hike to Taktsang monastery.

A visit to these two places will give you a sound knowledge of Bhutan’s rich culture and traditions. Accordingly, you can also witness the historical arts and crafts and the Bhutanese people’s lifestyle.

The way of life, culture, and social design is striking components of the nation, which consistently draws in many visitors from across the globe. The Dzong architecture incorporated into the kingdom speaks beyond the bounds of Bhutanese Heritage. Allegedly, The dzongs worked during the 17th century, especially without using a single nail! These are the showstoppers among all Bhutanese designs.

Moreover, a short visit to Thimpu will lead you to the Heritage Museum and Tradition School of Arts and Crafts. Punakha National Park and Jigme Dorji National Library are some other sites included in the Bhutan Cultural Tour package.

Additionally, You will have the opportunity to visit some farmhouses and interact with the locals, particularly experiencing rural life. This cultural heritage proudly manifests itself and extends a unique artistic perspective-— from the traditional woven garments to the prayer flags on high mountain slopes, the natural environment, and the religious, masked folk dances. You will enjoy the stunning views of the Himalayas from DochuLa Pass (3100 m) on the Bhutan Cultural Tour.

DochuLa Pass is one of Bhutan’s most beautiful mountain passes, located about 20 km from Thimphu. During this time, you will also be able to witness the 108 memorial Stupas, also known as “Druk Wangyal Chortens.”

In the Capital city of Paro, you will visit the famous Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery), Ringpung Dzong (fortress), Kichu Lhakhang, and Drugyal Dzong. In the next destination at Thimpu, you will explore the memorial Chorten, nunnery temples, folk heritage museum, and many other local attractions.

Finally, we’ll drive to Punakha and visit the majestic Punakha Dzong. We are also visiting Chimi Lhakhang, a famous Bhutanese fertility temple. As we move past the DochuLa pass, you can enjoy the company of the unique Bhutanese landscape.

The best time to go on the Bhutan Cultural Tour is during the spring months of March-May when the valleys come alive with flowers in bloom, and in October for trekking—as the Himalayan peaks are prominently visible with clear skies. Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Paro (Druk Air) – Transfer to a Hotel

The flight to Paro aboard the national airlines, Druk Air, gives an overarching view to the spectacular beauty of our country. In clear weather, magnificent panoramic views of the world’s highest mountains are seen engulfing the dense green Paro valley as you land. After clearing past customs and visa control, you meet your guide from Bhutan and drive to Paro town for lunch. Following your meal, you can visit the National Museum: Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower, and the Paro Rinpung Dzong, built in the 17th century to defend the valley against Tibetan invaders. The Dzong is now utilized as an administration center and school for monks. The evening ends with a stroll through the main street of Paro. Dinner and overnight stay is reserved at the hotel.

Day 2: Paro – Thimphu

After you’re done with breakfast, you drive through a winding road to the Drukgyal Dzong, a ruined fort which once defended this valley from Tibetan invasions. Mount Chomolhari can be seen on a clear day from Drukgyal village. You can visit a typical Bhutanese Farm House of a local family for a close-up scene of the everyday Bhutanese life. We then drive to Shari to hike up (or horse ride) to the “Tiger’s nest”. The horse rides or hikes up to the cafeteria takes around one and a half hours. At the view point, you will encounter a monastery, where Guru Padmasambhava landed on the back of a tigress in the 8th century. After lunch on our way back to the hotel, we visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan built in the 7th century. Further into the late afternoon, we head to Thimphu, the modern capital of Bhutan. Driving to the capital takes around one and a half hours from Paro. The city has a population of approximately 98,500, and the town is made up of just three rows of shops. The interesting fact here is: Thimpu is the only capital in the world without any traffic lights. Enroute, is a visit to Simtokha Dzong. Shortly after, you check-in to your room. Dinner and stay is organized at the hotel.

Day 3: Thimphu valley sightseeing – Punakha

Today we go for sightseeing across the Capital. This includes a visit to the visit National Memorial Chorten, built in honor of late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. Also included is a visit to the Folk Heritage Museum, which is dedicated to connecting people with the Bhutanese rural past. In this museum, we can witness an exhibition of ancient objects and artifacts used in rural households. We also visit the Textile Museum, where the art of traditional weaving is still kept alive and well-preserved. The exhibition has an extensive collection of old textiles that are rich in color and design. After lunch, we visit the School of Arts and Crafts where the 13 Crafts are taught to the Young Children. It was established in 1971 with two objectives i.e. to preserve and promote the traditional arts and crafts and to create more job opportunities. Later in the afternoon, we depart for Punakha, the ancient capital of Bhutan. As we leave Thimphu, the trail ascends steeply through a forest of pine and cedar trees, reaching the Dochu La pass (3,050 m) with panoramic views of the Himalayan mountain ranges. After stopping for tea and the view, we descend along a series of fastener bends to the fertile valley of Punakha. Check-in at hotel Meri Puensum/Zangtopelri. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 4: Punakha – Wangdue – Paro

In the morning we visit Punakha Dzong, winter seat of the Je Khenpo and the Monk Body, strategically located between the rivers of the Mo (Female) the Chu and Pho (Male) Chu. On a short drive from Punakha, we reach the valley of Wangdue which is one of the major towns and district headquarters of Western Bhutan. Here you can observe a scene of the Wangdiphodrang Dzong, which dramatically dwells on the spur of a hill at the junction of the Tsang Chu and Dang Chu rivers. Then we drive to Paro over the Dochola pass. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 5: Paro – Kathmandu (by Druk Air)

Though a short trip, gave us an unforgettable lifetime experience. Our guide was very knowledgeable about Bhutanese history and was able to answer all our questions. The meals, hotels, and transport were up to the mark. Hike to Tigers Nest Monastery was the prime highlight; the view of the mountains and valleys were impressive. Overall, we were left with a beyond great experience.
