Hiking distance: 14 km
Sundarijal is a good choice for those who want to go on a one-day hiking trip but don't want to spend a lot of time walking. Located 14 kilometers north of Kathmandu, Sundarijal is accessible through the Shivpuri National Park and Wildlife Reserve. There is a popular hiking route from Sundarijal to Okhreni via Mulkhark, and another route from Sundarijal to Changunarayan. Hikers can also take the Shivpuri or Nagarkot trails from Sundarijal. Another option is the hiking trail from Mulkhark to Jhule via Chisapani in Sindhupalchok, which requires an overnight stay in Chisapani. Sundarijal is popular not only for its beautiful views, but also for the second oldest hydroelectric project in Nepal.
Before going on a hike, it's important to do some research and gather information about the route, the local culture and way of life, the weather, and the destination. It's also a good idea to bring along some essential materials, such as walking sticks, sunglasses, a hat or cap, and sun protection cream. Wearing comfortable shoes and clothing is also important for a successful hike. If you are hiking during the rainy season, be sure to bring a raincoat and umbrella. Since many hiking routes pass through forests, it's also a good idea to bring light snacks, fruit, and a first aid kit.
