Everest Region

“It’s not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves”

Located in the north-east of Nepal, the Everest region is one of the most popular trekking regions in Nepal. Everest is more a pilgrimage than a trek where one enjoys their journey of a life time through the classic and astounding trails. It’s a true privilege to visit a place of such beauty, and perhaps that’s why whether you’re in love with all things adventurous, an adrenaline pumping expedition or the plain old slow paced lifestyle with stunning natural landscapes all around you, the Everest region is one adventure that never disappoints. Besides, mountains, the region is well known for the loyal and friendliness of its inhabitants [The Sherpa’s].

The Everest region not only hosts three of the most popular treks in Nepal, it is also flowing with ancient Buddhist culture. This region is mostly famous among tourists for its scenic views of the highest peak of the world, Mount Everest (8,848 m). Everest is also home to the stunning Sagarmatha National Park, a magnificent mountainside forest that is full of all kinds of birds and animals including snow leopards, lesser pandas, Himalayan tahr, musk deer, ghoral, weasels, wolves, jackals and black bears. The most common bird species seen in the park include the impeyan pheasant, blood pheasant, red-billed chough, snow pigeon and snow cock. Among the major destinations of trekking in Nepal, Everest region stood second despite poor accessibility. It is more expensive and difficult to get Solu Khumbu than to Annapurna. Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world, is known as Sagarmatha [The goddess mother of the world) in Nepal. It has long been the greatest attraction for nature lovers and the trekkers.

To truly enjoy Everest for all its beauty, you need to embark on a trekking adventure and this is easily possible when you choose one of the treks available in this region, all leading to the most desirable destination of Nepal – Everest Base Camp. Most of these popular trails offer well-equipped lodges and comfort cabins for accommodation so that you’re never far from luxury despite being in an area that forces you to look beyond modern-day comforts to relive the beauty of nature. That said the mainstreams of trekkers in Solu-Khumbu, the Everest region, are all using the same trail. From the alarming airstrip at Lukla, the trail leads the way to north into Khumbu. Prices rise as you ascend; near the top, most lodges offer basic bunk beds only. The main Jiri–Lukla–Namche–Base Camp route is very clear-cut, as is the alternative high-level spur, to the Gokyo lakes, but a guide is sensibly needed for pretty much anything else. The trail leads on to the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar (or Namche for short): one route leads to Everest Base Camp and the viewpoint of Kala Pattar; the other for the beautiful Gokyo Lakes. Both high points are about eight days from Lukla, and can be combined by crossing the high pass of the Cho La. Thus this region will be etched in your mind once you decide to go through its inconceivable paths.
