Annapurna Region

annapurna-region-840x430

“Every mountain top is within reach if you just keep climbing”

The Annapurna’s popularity is well deserved. Located towards the north of Central Nepal, with several peaks the Annapurna massif is regarded as one of the most spectacular mountain regions in the world. Nowhere else do you get such a varied feast of scenery and hill culture and the logistics are relatively simple. The Annapurna faces Pokhara like an icy, crenellated wall, 40km across, with nine peaks over 7000m spurring from its ramparts and Annapurna I reigning above them all at 8091m. Treks can all start or finish close to Pokhara, which is a relaxing place to end a trek and a handy place to start one, with its clued-up guesthouses, equipment-rental shops and easy transportation to trailheads. According to a recent survey by Modern Maturity (USA), Annapurna region has been recognized as one of the world’s best trekking trails as thousands of tourists visit this region every year.

Tourism is relatively sustainable, too, thanks to ACAP, the Annapurna Conservation Area Project. The Annapurna Base Camp Trek offers one of the best opportunities to see and experience the Himalayas of Nepal. The inevitable consequence is commercialization. The trekking routes all over this region are internationally popular as it offers a great variety of beautiful landscapes, nature and culture of the central mountains of Nepal and a mix of cultures unmatched by any other treks in Nepal. The trail starts in the lowland villages, where rice terraces cut through the mountainsides. It continues into the Annapurna Himal, where one will see colorful villages, green forests, bamboo jungles, rivers and cascades rich with birds and animal life. Next is the South face of Mt. Annapurna South (7219m) through the base camp of Mt. Machhapuchhare (6993m). Access to the main trails is incredible easy. The starting point for most treks is the pretty lakeside town of Pokhara, just a short drive from Kathmandu. With a relaxed feel it’s the perfect place to spend a few days gathering last minute kit and enjoying the delicious cakes from one of the many bakeries lining its streets.

It’s a region of stunning diversity, ranging from the sodden bamboo forests of the southern slopes (Lumle, northwest of Pokhara, is the wettest village in Nepal) to windswept desert (Jomsom, in the northern rain shadow, is the driest). The Annapurna trails actually put forward a far greater variety than the Everest region. You can pick widely between relatively easy walks through the fertile foothills and terraced farmland or more demanding, high altitude treks, such as the classic Annapurna Circuit and Annapurna Sanctuary routes.
