Gokyo and Everest Base Camp Trek

19 Days

The Gokyo and Everest Base Camp Trek is arguably one of the dramatic and interesting treks done in the Everest region. This trek explores friendly Sherpa villages, visits monasteries, seeks wildlife and unveils dramatic mountain scenery.  The Trekking route goes avoiding the crowds on the main route and including the ascent of Gokyo Ri and the crossing of the Cho La pass both of which are really fantastic. We are able to explore this high mountain wilderness, the quieter Gokyo Valley as well as the main Everest trails.

After your arrival you will have a free day in Kathmandu to experience one of Asia’s most fascinating cities before flying to Lukla, the starting point of our trek. Our goal is Everest Base Camp on the Khumbu Glacier with the chance to climb iconic Kala Pattar (5545m), which offers fabulous close-up views of Mount Everest. We follow the Dudh Kosi Valley to Namche Bazaar and then trek into Gokyo Valley. The trail is generally downhill for the first day but day two starts with a long hard climb to Namche, a surprisingly large town. The trail ascends gradually and we enjoy a series of short trekking days to ensure proper acclimatization, walking beside the moraines of Ngozumpa Glacier and turquoise lakes to reach our lodge in Gokyo.  At Gokyo we explore four or five among the six of the Gokyo Lakes. The third lake Dudh Pokhari, the fourth lake Thonak Tsho and the fifth lake Nagazumpa Tsho are generally more popular lakes of Gokyo Valley. The from there we head to climb Gokyo Ri (5360m) to a view of all of the region’s 8000-metre peaks including Everest (8,848 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Makalu (8,485 m) and Cho Oyu (8,201m) – a breathtaking panorama. From Gokyo we trek via Phortse and Dingboche to rejoin the main trail to Everest, which we follow to Gorak Shep. It is from here we make the round trip on a rugged trail to visit Everest Base Camp. However, to get a better view of the mountain and a 360-degree panorama of many other Himalayan peaks, the short but steep climb to Kala Pattar is the highlight for many on this trek. Here the climbing route up the mountain can be seen, showing the immense scale and difficulty involved for any climbing team attempting to climb Everest. Then we return back to Lukla following the trial down to Dudh Koshi River from Namche.

This trek is graded challenging, requiring participants to commit to a dedicated training program prior to departure. Depending on your current level of fitness, the Gokyo and Everest Base Camp Trek can be an challenging journey. Come join the Incredible Mountains team to be part of this startling trek to Gokyo and Everest Base Camp.
